An evergreen, clambering woody shrub or weak climber, up to 6 m height (with support). Leaves pale green, papery and velvety. Leaves are arranged oppositely along the stem, and have prominent veins, elliptic to ovate shape. Stems squarish in cross-section, densely covered with yellowish to grey fuzz.

Called "orchid flowers" in the potpourri trade, the 3 or 4 involucral bracts are pale purple (in the native state), oblong, obovate-oblong, or broadly elliptic, 2-3 cm long x 0.8-1.2 cm wide, pubescent. The calyx is funnelform, about 7 mm long, lobes 1/2 as long as tube, outside.
